Mary E. Baker Dies; Was Marion Pioneer
Mrs. Mary E. Baker, 87, of 816 Ninth avenue, Marion, died at 2 p.m. Thursday in a Cedar Rapids hospital.
Born Feb. 19, 1862, in Pennsylvania, she came to Marion with her parents when two years old. For years her father, Dr. David B. Hindman, maintained an office in the family residence at Seventh avenue at Ninth street. She was graduated from Marion high school in 1879, attended Coe college and later taught school in Marion and Waterloo. She was married Nov. 26, 1896, to N.A. Baker. He died in 1927.
Mrs. Baker was a member of the Presbyterian church and for 30 years was in charge of the cradle roll department of the Presbyterian Sunday school. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Baker was secretary to Supt. C.B. Vernon for several years. She was a member of the Theristrial club. Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Clara E. Wilson, of Marion.
Services will be conducted in the Presbyterian church at 1:30 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. C.V.R. DeJong. Mrs. Eunice DeJong and Mrs. Dorothy Robinson will sing. Burial will be in Oak Shade cemetery. Friends may call at the Yocom-Murdoch chapel.
