The Marion Sentinel Thursday Feb. 28, 1901
MRS. MAGGIE HINDMAN
The funeral of Mrs. Dr. D.R. Hindman, whose death occurred at the family residence on west 7th Avenue on Friday morning, Feb. 22nd, 1901, was held in the Presbyterian church, Sunday morning, Feb. 24, 1901, at 10:30 o'clock.
It was thought singularly appropriate that the last rites for one so intimately associated with the church should be celebrated with the church service. The Sabbath morning worship was observed as usual, the funeral entering into it and becoming a part of a blessed influence. The funeral party came at the hour when this service began. As it approached, the solemn strains of the Chopin march funebre sounded. The pastor left the pulpit and met the bearers of the encoffined remains at the north door, and together with these, who were the elders of the church, escorted the family and friends to the front. In the very place where Mrs. Hindman had habitually stood as Superintendent of the primary department of the Sunday School, and from which she was used to address the little ones, her revered body was places, that there for the last time as a visible presence the blessed influence of the sight should be such as to make all feel that "she being dead yet speaketh."
The pastor, Walter H. Reynolds, preached the sermon. The text was 1st John 3:23--"And this is his commandment: that we should believe on the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment." In interpreting this text the well known prominent characteristics of this beloved woman, who was chief among us in good deeds were used for illustrative purposes. Her faith, her love, issuing in good works, and forgiving, forbearing spirit, were spoken of and an appeal made for the living to learn the secret of her splendid life, which it was stated, lay in her love of Jesus and obedience to His Gospel.
A very large and representative company of friends were present, and exceedingly beautiful flowers adorned the church.
The music was furnished by the full choir, Mrs. Martin being the soloist for the day. The hymns were--"My Jesus Thou Wilt," "Jesus Lover of my Sou," "Some Day We'll Understand" and "Why do we Mourn Departing Friends." After the benediction Miss sMarshall played the Beethoven funeral march then all that is mortal of this beloved woman was borne to the grave in Oak Shade cemetery. Mr. E.A. Vaughn, Dr. Robert LaGrance, Mr. E.L. Fernow, Prof. S.W. Stookey and Mr. John Wallace, elders of the church, were the pall bearers, one elder only, Mr. Benjamin Bowman, being sick, was not able to be present. Mr. Max Voris, one of the deacons, took his place.
The following obituary was read: "Died at her home in Marion, Iowa, February 22nd, 1901, Mrs. Maggie J. Hindman. She was a daughter of Samuel and Mary Jackson, and was born March 31st, 1835, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She was the third of nine children, six of whom are still living: William W., in Marysville, Mo., Samuel M. and Spencer B. in Preston, S.D.; D.A., Annie, R. and Mrs. J.C. Vaughn, in Fresno, Cal. She was married in Chester County, Penn., January 3rd, 1861, to Dr. D.R. Hindman, and came to Marion in June, 1864, where her home has been ever since. Six children were born to them, three of whom are still living,--Mrs. N.A. Baker, Mrs. L.R. Wilson and Carl J., of Marion, and all were with her during her sickness and when the final call came. She joined the Presbyterian church when quite young. She was a life long laborer in Christ's Church and active in every effort to establish righteousness and to suppress evil. She was a capable and efficient leading officer in many different departments of church and reform work, esteemed and loved by all, an ideal, Christian gentlewoman.
