John Northcott Dies Monday
Served on Coe Faculty for Five Years as Assistant to President
John B. Northcott, formerly assistant to the president of Coe college, died at a local hospital at 8:10 p.m. Monday after a brief illness. Mr. Northcott will be remembered especially because of his many civic activities. After graduating from DePauw University in 1906, he was engaged in Y.M.C.A. work for a number of years before coming to Cedar Rapids in 1919 as general secretary of the Y.M.C.A. here.
In 1922 he was chosen secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, working in that capacity until he joined Coe college administration in 1924. While engaged as assistant to the president, Mr. Northcott became an honorary member of Phi Kappa Phi, national scholarship society. In 1928 he was chairman of the campaign which raised funds for the erection of the Men's gymnasium. He left Coe in 1929 to join the local sales force of the Equitable Life insurance company.
Members of the immediate family who survive are Mrs. Northcott and three children: Louise, graduate of Coe in the class of '32, John, who is now a junior at Coe, and Evelyn, a student at Washington high school.
All college classes were suspended during the funeral this afternoon, and the recreation room remained closed.
