John F. Monroe, 57, of 2907 Soutter Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday at Veterans Hospital, Iowa City, after a long illness.
He was born Feb. 3, 1925, at Charles City and married Rosetta Dunlap in 1968 at Cedar Rapids. She died Nov. 30, 1972.
Mr. Monroe served with the Navy during World War II and later was a painter and decorator. He was a member of Eagles lodge and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his mother, Emily Butson of Platteville, Wis.; a daughter, Nancy Schreiver of Rockford, Iowa; a son, Dan, with the Air Force in the Philippines; four grandchildren; two sisters, Coralie Kavanaugh of Watts, Okla., and Leonora Clauson of McHenry, Ill.; and a brother, Donald of California.
Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. today at Murdoch's, Marion, by the Rev. Nick Longworth of the First United Methodist Church of Marion. There will be no visitation, and the body will be cremated. Burial will be later at the Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion. A memorial fund has been established.
