The Marion Sentinel Thursday May 4, 1900
The funeral of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Beckner was held at 2 o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, May, 19, 1900, at the residence of her son, Mr. C.P. Beckner, 5th avenue and 16th street. Many friends were present with the relatives to pay sincere respect to the memory of the departed. Beautiful hymns of faith and hope were sung by a choir of four, namely: Mr. J.M. Tallman, Mr. J.E. Bromwell, Mrs. V.G. Shumack and Mrs. J.W. Bowman. After scripture reading and prayer and a statement of the comforting and instructive truths concerning abiding trust in God expressed for the believer in the twenty-third Psalm all that was mortal of this beloved mother was borne from the house to be placed in the grave in Oak Shade cemetery by the following bearers: Messrs. Benjamin Mathes, J.C. Davis, Z.V. Elsberry, W.M. Harbeson, Jacob Crowl, and J.A. Starbuck. The services both at the grave and at the house were conducted by Rev. Walter H. Reynolds, pastor of the Presbyterian church.
The record of the useful life in brief outline is as follows: "Elizabeth Mentzer was born in Franklin county, Pennsylvania, March 28th, 1811. She died in Marion, Thursday, May 17th, 1900, aged eighty-nine years, one month and nineteen days. She was married in 1828 in the old Pennsylvania home to John Beckner. The union of life then made remained unbroken for sixty-three years when on December 19th, 1891, her husband was taken before her to the other world.
"Mr. and Mrs. Beckner removed from their home in Franklin county, Pennsylvania to Homes county, now called Ashland county, near to the town of Loudenville, Ohio. From thence they removed in 1845 to Marion, Iowa. Here for more than half a century the home they established has been maintained as a good influence in the place. Nine children were born to them. All save one survive. This one, Pauline, who, who was the wife of Mr. A. Bowman who resides near Marion, died in the Christian faith, Sept. 27th, 1898.
"The other children are Ruann, wife of Henry Hunter, of Beaverton, Oregon; Katherine, wife of Alexander Houston, of Coggon, Iowa; Nancy, wife of John Spauton of Cloud county, Kansas; Mary Jane, wife of B.H. Reese, of Anamosa, Iowa; Sarah, wife of Morgan Parsons, of La Porte City, Iowa; John, of Marion; C. Perry, of Marion; and Rebecca who resides with the last named member of this family group in Marion. To this son's home Mrs. Beckner came four years ago on the death of his wife that she and her daughter Rebecca might be with him to assist him in caring for his motherless children. Of immediate descendants, beside the eight children mentioned above, thirty grandchildren and many great grandchildren survive.
"Mrs. Beckner believed in Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour. In early life she united with the Dunkard church. She was a lovely christian, sweet and strong in character. With an abiding trust in God she said a short time before her death: 'I believe my work is done and I am all ready to go.' She was beloved by all who knew her. 'Her children rise up and call her blessed.'"
