Local Pioneer Called by Death
S.A. Parmenter Lived Here for More than 75 Years
One of Linn county's pioneers and veteran railroad conductor, Stephen A. Parmenter, 79, died Tuesday afternoon at his home 312 Twelfth street, after a very short illness.
He had been a resident of Marion more than 75 years and during the greater share of his years was employed as a railroad worker. He was born April 9, 1851, at Monroe Milles, Ohio, being the youngest of a family of four children born to Marshall and Maria Parmenter. He moved with his family to Marion when but two years of age and has been a resident ever since. His father ran a grist mill when first coming here.
When 14 years of age Mr. Parmenter began working for the Milwaukee road as a fireman. Later he became associated with his father in the draying business and after four years of this became engineer for the Marion Water Co.
He married Miss Lydia Miller at the home of his parents on Feb. 22, 1872, and to them were born four children, two daughters and two sons. The one son, Frank Marshall, died on Aug. 25, 1895[this date is incorrect]. The daughters are Mrs. Charles Rowe and Mrs. Bert Hollenbeck of Marion.
After working three years with the Water company Mr. Parmenter again became associated with the Milwaukee railroad as brakeman. He became conductor later and served in that capacity for forty-five years. He retired from active work about four years ago.
He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and was affiliated with the Odd Fellows for fifty-eight years. He was also a member of the Elks lodge at Cedar Rapids.
Those surviving him are his widow and two daughters. The funeral services will be held at the Yocom funeral chapel at 2:30 on Friday with the Rev. William Perdew officiating. Burial will be in Oak Shade.
