The Marion Register Tuesday December 31, 1918
MRS. JAMES OXLEY.
Mrs. James Oxley died at her home 957 13th street at midnight, Sunday, December 29th, after an illness of two weeks. Her death resulted from pneumonia, following an attack of influenza.
The funeral service will be from the residence at two o'clock today, Tuesday afternoon.
Hannah Deacon was born at Centerton, Burlington County, New Jersey, on August 23rd, 1846. In the spring of 1853, her parents removed to St. Joseph County, Indiana, where the family resided until the spring of 1863, when they removed to Linn County, Iowa, residing in Marion during the summer of that year. In the fall they removed to a farm a few miles northeast of Marion, purchased by the father during the summer. In this home, on October 22, 1868, this daughter was united in marriage to James Oxley, who survives her. In the spring of 1869, the newly married couple took up their residence upon the farm belonging to Mr. Oxley, about three miles east of Marion, and this continued to be their home until 1900, when they removed to their present residence in Marion.
Three sons have been born to them, Herbert D. and George Marvin, engaged in business in Chicago, and Charles Harold, now in France engaged in army Y.M.C.A. work.
She leaves also surviving one sister and three brothers, Miss Mary Deacon, a teacher in the schools at Long Beach, Cal., Dr. George Deacon of Pasadena, Cal., Rev. Edwin Deacon of Baker City, Oregon, and C.J. Deacon of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
On October 22, 1918, Mr. and Mrs. Oxley celebrated in a quiet way their golden wedding anniversary. It marked the passing of fifty years of quiet, prosperous and happy married life with nothing at that time to indicate the separation so soon to take place.
In her death there passes from us one of the most lovable and unselfish characters, an affectionate and loving wife, mother and sister, and a devoted friend.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Marion, and possessed an unfaltering faith, and a desire for Christian service far beyond her strength. For many years she has been unable, because of physical ills, to do much beyond her home, and this endeared her even more to her home circle, to which she ministered so faithfully.
It may be well said of her, "Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also and he praiseth her."
