James Oxley, 93, Marion's Oldest Man, War Vet, Dies
James Oxley, age 93, Marion's oldest man and the second oldest resident here, died today at 10 a.m. at his home, 957 Thirteenth street. He and his brother, Robert, of Marion were the surviving members of the family of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Oxley, who were among the earliest pioneers of this community.
Born in Montgomery county, Indiana, April 29, 1838, he came with his parents to Marion township in 1841. He converted a tract of virgin prairie three miles east of Marion, into a farm on which he resided for forty years. He retired to Marion in 1900 and became active in the affairs of the community.
He was first married to Frances Tryon in 1859, her death occuring[sic] in 1863. Their only child, Louella McGimpsey, died in 1928. He was married in 1868 to Hannah Deacon who died in 1918. Their family consisted of three sons, Herbert of Minneapolis, Harold of Miami, and Marvin of Marion, all of whom survive.
Mr. Oxley's death leaves but three Civil war veterans in Marion. He was first commander of Robert Mitchell post, No. 206, G.A.R. Enlisting in 1862 in Company H, Twenty-fourth Iowa Volunteer infantry, he was promoted to first sergeant. He was wounded in the thigh in an engagement at Champion Hills in May 1863. In October of the following year he was taken prisoner at Cedar Creek, Va., and was confined for five month in Salisbury prison, North Carolina. He was then exchanged and served until July, 1865, when he was mustered out at Davenport. Mr. Oxley was a member of the Presbyterian church. His death followed a long illness.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
