The Marion Pilot Thursday April 9, 1866
HERBERT ELLIOTT
Our community was plunged all in a moment into the deepest grief on Saturday afternoon, April 4th, 1896, by the news that Herbie Elliott had been suddenly killed. In company with a number of playmates he had been playing in a cave in the yard attached to his mother's dwelling, finding the ladder or steps were not satisfactory, he sent his young companions for material to construct another ladder while he went into the cave to get the tools to work with. It was about 5 p.m. or later, and while alone in the cave, that the ground fell in and caught him, crushing out his life instantly.
He was born September 28th, 1883, and died April 4th, 1896, in his 13th year.
As a child Herbie was old for his years; a manly boy; a help and support to his mother and beloved most dearly by his brother, and by his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Elliott, of Iowa City, who in response to a telegram announcing the sad event attended the funeral and by the brothers and sisters of Mrs. Elliott and her husband.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Jno. W. Geiger pastor of the First Congregational church, to which the deceased, his mother and brother, Owen, were to be united on the next day, Easter Sunday. How strangly[sic] all our earthly plans are merged in the darkness and unknown. Tuesday, April 7th, at 2:00 p.m. a large company assembled at the home of Mrs. Mattie Elliott to attend the service. The music was rendered by Mrs. HIlliard, Miss Gertie Kurtz, and Messrs Jas. McKean and E.J. Esgate. The Rev. Mr. Frazier assisted in the service.
There were many and profuse floral decorations. The young playmates of Herbie attended in a body and dropped flowers in the open grave as a mark of love to their departed companion.
The deepest sympathy goes out to the bereaved friends in this hour of trial, and we hope with them for the meeting that shall be looked forward to in the blessed clime where death cannot come.
