Mrs. Martha Elliott Died Saturday; Was a Marion Pioneer
Mrs. Martha Ann Elliott, 86, died at the home of her son, Owen N. Elliott, in Cedar Rapids, Saturday evening at about 11:00 p.m.
She was born at Bethel, Vermont, August 6, 1853, the daughter of Dr. N.W. and Elizabeth Granger Owen, and came to Marion with her parents when but three years of age. Here her parents were a vital part of this vigorous young community, and she was active in the younger social circles. She attended the private school known as Mrs. Small's Seminary, and became quite proficient in her music, and was able to add much to the cultural life of her day. It was while in attendance at this school that she and a group of girl friends organized in 1867 the O.O.P. club of Marion--the recognized oldest continuous woman's club in this state. Her membership in this club had long been a matter of considerable pride to her, and for several years she has been the only surviving charter member. She was a member of the Marion Congregational church, and for many years taught in its Sunday school a class of young girls, many of them now community leaders.
She was married in 1881 to Herbert Elliott, the local photographer, who died some years later as the result of being gassed in one of Marion's big fires. Another tragedy, in her life was the loss of their oldest son, Herbert, jr., who wen quite a young lad was suffocated by a cave-in of a dirt play house which he and neighbor boys had builded in great glee.
Besides her son, Owen, and his wife, she is survived by one brother, Carl N. Owen, Marion's pioneer druggist.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Turner mortuary in Cedar Rapids, with the Rev. C.G. Ellinger, pastor of the Marion Congregational church, in charge of the service. Burial was made in Oak Shade cemetery in Marion.
