HERBERT IRWIN OWEN
Death has again claimed one of our number. A brother beloved has fallen on sleep. His column is broken and his brethren mourn. In the midst of life we are in death. In the mid-day of his usefulness, surrounded by numerous friends he was called to lay down the working tools of his profession and quit the scenes of active labor. The disastrous fire that swept over the business portion of our city, destroyed his photograph gallery and much that could never be replaced; yet with characteristic energy he at once prepared to resume business. The excitement incident to the fire, and unusual exposure, are likely the causes that precipitated his sudden and fatal illness. He was an active Freemason, having been initiated in DeMolay Lodge 383, Jan. 12, 1881; passed March 29, 1881 and raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason, May 16, 1881. He served as Senior Deacon in 1882, and as Junior Warden in 1883. He became a member of Marion lodge, No. 6, last year by the consolidation act.
His relations with his brethren were always pleasant. While not effusive in his make up, he was jovial and pleasant as a companion. A large circle of friends mourn his departure. He died Aug. 10, 1894, in his 44th year of age. His funeral services were conducted by Marion lodge No. 6, A.F. & A.M. Rev. J.W. Geiger was the ministed in charge, and the services were held at his late home on Seventh avenue, Sunday, Aug. 12, 1894.
Brother Elliott was born in Fairfield, Westmoreland[sic] Co., Penn., Dec. 230th, 1850, and was consequently nearly 44 years old.
He moved with his parent to Tipton, Ia., in 1854. About 1868 he went to Davenport and learned and afterwards engaged in photograph as a business. He came to Marion about 1875 and on Oct. 25, 1882, was married to Miss Mattie Owen.
Bro. Elliott leaves his beloved wife and two children, Herbert and Owen, also his aged father and mother, two brothers, Clarence D. of Omaha, Neb., and Stanley L. of Tipton, Ia., and four sisters, Mrs. Della Marble of Hampton, Ia., Mrs. Theressa A. Murry, of Tipton, Mrs. Eva Mahler, of Grafton, N. Dakota, and Miss Ida M. Elliott, of Iowa City.
All the above were at the funeral except Mrs. Murry detained by sickness and Mrs. Mahler who was to distant to arrive in time.
Brother Elliott was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of the Knights of Pythias and Woodmen of the world, and a charger member of the W.S. Booth Hook and Ladder company of our city fire department. The Iowa Freemason and Knight Templar.
