The Marion Sentinel of Marion, Iowa, Wednesday July 3, 1957
An employee of the Dows dairy farm south of Marion, Lonnie George Erhart, 64, was gored to death by a bull Tuesday afternoon about 2:00 p.m.
Dows herdsman, Perry Knapp, was severely injured going to Erhart's aid and is in a Cedar Rapids hospital with internal injuries and wounds on his back.
According to the Sheriff's office, Erhart had taken the bull to the water tank. The animal became angered and went to the pasture. Whether he dragged the man into the pasture wasn't certain. The goring occurred in the pasture.
The bull was later destroyed.
Lonnie George Erhart was born April 23, 1893 at Selma, Kan., the son of William G. and Ella Collins Erhart. He was the oldest of 12 children.
He was married November 14, 1917 at Mound City, Kan., to Daisy Smith. They came to Iowa ten years ago and lived on the Dows farm for the past four years.
Surviving besides his wife are his mother, Mrs. Ella Curtis, of Iola, Kan.; five sons, Herschel of Garden Grove, Cal., Lowell of Montisano, Wash., Lloyd of Redondo Beach, Cal., Wilbur of Marion and Herbert at home; three daughters, Mrs Jutt Brundage of Iola, Kan., Mrs. Roy Trainer of Lotus, Cal., and Mrs. Curtis Stephens of Rupert, Idaho; 18 grandchildren.
Also surviving are eight brothers, Thomas of Plano, Ill., Monroe of Garnett, Kan., Russell of Moses Lake, Wash., Charles of Talmadge, Neb., Frank of Shenandoah, Pyrle of North Kansas City, Mo., Forrest of Aurora, Ill., and Clifford of Bucyrus, Kan.; three sisters, Mrs. Glen Harvey of Gas, Kan., Mrs. Dwight Stephens of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mrs. Earl Beckett of Overland Park, Kan.
Memorial services will be conducted at Murdoch chapel at 3:30 p.m. Friday by Rev. Russell Buriss of Cedar Rapids. The remains will be taken to Kinkead, Kan., for further services and burial.
