The Marion Weekly Sentinel Thursday November 16, 1922
Obituary of Shelton Hickman
Shelton Hickman, son of Joseph and Mary Hickman, was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, September 12, 1836. He was one of a family of nine children, of whom two survive, George Hickman of Shawnee, Okla., and John Hickman, of Baxter Springs, Kansas.
He came with his parents to Jones county, Iowa, in 1852. He was united in marriage in 1859 to Cloe[sic] A. Ross, who preceded him in death, February 15, 1913. To this union were born six children, five of whom are living: Mrs. W.J. Greer, Marion; Mrs. T.P. Cowan, Spirit Lake, Iowa; Marcus Hickman, Mrs. E.J. Gilmore and Mrs. H.H. Newell, Alburnett. John Marshall, the eldest son, passed away October 6, 1907. Mr. Hickman is also survived by fifteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Bowen's Prairie continued to be his home until 1894, when he moved with his family to Linn county. Shortly after coming to Alburnett he united with the Methodist Episcopal church under the ministry of F.P. Fisher, who was privileged to perform the last rites for one who has had the welfare of this church on his heart thru the years, and so zealous was he for its welfares that he has provided a fund to aid in its support in the future.
Despite limited advantages in early life and strenuous activity in those pioneer days, Mr. Hickman, developed a wonderfully strong intellect, fortunately fortified by a rugged constitution. His keen interest in public affairs never wavered until failing eyesight about five years ago caused him to slowly relinquish his grasp on things material. Physical infirmity became intensified about four weeks ago and continued until the morning of November 11, when he passed away at the home of his youngest daughter, Mrs. H.H. Newell, near Marion.
Funeral services were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.J. Greer, in Marion, Monday at 11 a.m., and were in charge of Rev. Fred P. Fisher, of Decorah, Iowa, a former pastor of the deceased, assisted by Rev. Earle A. Baker of Marion and Rev. Thompson of Alburnett. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Rev. Baker, D.E. Voris and Misses Marguerite Sutherland and Mildred Titus. Burial was in Oak Shade cemetery, Marion.
Among those from out of town attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. C.K. Greer and A.R. Doxsee, of Monticello, Mrs. Rose Hickman of Chicago and Marshall Hickman of Mt. Vernon.
