GEORGE F. GROLL
The following is a brief sketch of the life of one of Marion's well known and long time citizens, a man who enjoyed the esteem of all who knew him.
Geo. F. Groll was born in Betigheim, Germany, Nov. 14, 1825 and died at the home of his son, Charles on Central avenue, January 2, 1913, being 87 years, 1 month and 18 days old. He came to the United States when 21 years old and for a time worked in a tannery at Salem, N.J. In 1854 he came west and settled in Marion, Iowa. Three years later he moved onto his farm near Martin's Creek which was his home until he retired from active life in 1893. Since that time he has made his home in Marion.
March 6, 1855 he was married to Mary D., daughter of Jacob and Mary Ann Davis. To them were born six children: James H., Charles F., John D., Rachel, Jacob C., and Frank E. only two of which are living. Charles F., of Marion and Jacob C. of Lisbon, also five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
In February 1891 Mrs. Groll passed away on the farm which had been her home for so many years. About four years afterward Mr. Groll was married to Mrs. Oleman who passed away in August 1890. Mr. Groll was brought up in the Lutheran church of which he was a member until his death.
