ALDARETTE NOTT
Miss Aldarette Nott, 73, one of the pioneer residents of Marion died Friday, April 12 at her home here, following a long illness. Her condition had been considered critical for many weeks.
Aldarette Nott was the daughter of Ruben Hathaway and Elizabeth Crossland Nott, and was born in McConnellsville, Morgan county, Ohio, Feb. 4, 1850.
Two years later she came to Marion, Linn county, with her parents, and one sister, Martha Ellen, and two brothers, Benjamin H. and Julius H. Nott, who have all preceded her on the bourne from which not traveler ever returns.
The family came by boat down the Ohio river to St. Louis, up the Mississippi to Muscatine and to Cedar Rapids by the last steamer that came up the Cedar river carr[y]ing passengers. The service was stopped because of sand bars, which made the channel too narrow. Cedar Rapids was then a mere hamlet and her father came over to Marion, the county seat, where he purchased property.
Miss Nott was of Scottish and English descent. At the age of 16 she united with the Congregational church following special services held by the Rev. John Ross, pastor. She was secretary of the Woman's Missionary society for a number of years, resigning on account of ill health. She was a charter member of the Theristriai[sic] club and was secretary for a time soon after it was organized. There is only one charger member of this club now living. All of her life from the time she was 2 years old, was spent in Marion, where she received her education. She attended private schools finishing at Miss Small's seminary. She taught several terms then gave up teaching on account of the serious illness and death of her mother.
A few years later her father, remarried and when the wife died leaving the baby daughter Sara H., nine months old. She became the home maker and cared for the baby sister to whom she was devoted and was in fact all that a mother could be, carrying on the work of rearing and the education of Sara, after the father's death with the help of her brother Benjamin, until his death in 1901.
She has been an invalid for many years, but was cheerful and interested in the work of her church, which she loved and the affairs of the world.
She leaves the one sister, Sara, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 from the home 1395 Tenth street with the Rev. G.T. Hanna of the Congregational church in charge.
