Thursday December 14, 1893 The Marion Sentinel
Died, at her home, in Marion, Dec. 9th, Mrs. Ann Gaston Sample.
She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Gaston and was born in Northumberland county, Pa., Dec. 20th, 1808. She had three brothers, viz Robert, Aaron and Daniel, and three sisters, Charlotte, Mary and Rosanna.
She was married, May 11th, 1837, to Wm. M. Sample. They were both children of the covenant, and were baptized in infancy by the Rev. Mr. Bryson, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Warrior Run, Pa., and both in their youth made a public profession of their faith in Christ, in connection with the same church.
In 1863, they moved to Iowa, and resided one year in the vicinity of Springville, and since in Marion, until their decease.
On January 16, 1864, she with her husband became members of the Presbyterian church in Marion, of which they remained members until their memberships was transferred to "the church above."
They had no children of their own, but before their removal to the west, they were seldom without the care of the children of others. Their residence being near an academy several of the students who afterward entered gospel ministry, carried with them very tender memories of the "Sample Home."
Two pastors of the prominent city Presbyterian churches were nephews of this family--the late Rev. Daniel Gaston, D.D., of Philadelphia, and Rev. R.M. Sample, D.D., now of New York city, but for many years pastor in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The late Mrs. Thomas Giffen and Mrs. Harried Hansel, mother of Mrs. George Carver, were nieces of Mrs. Sample.
Mr. Sample died, June 1st, 1882. She continued after the death of her husband to occupy the same home, and much of the time alone, contrary to the advice of her friends. But her excuse was that she and the Lord had lived together a good many years, and while glad to have her friends visit her, she was not afraid to be alone with the Lord. When able she was always at church and her pastor seldom called but her Bible was at her side, nor was he allowed to leave without a word of prayer.
She was only confined to her bed a few days. At first, she though she might recover, but soon realizing that the time of her departure had arrived she was calm and peaceful in prospect of death. Her husband, who died in his 80th years, was the last member of a large family of brothers and sisters and Mrs. Sample, in her 85th year is the last member of a family of seven.
The funeral service was held at the house and conducted by her pastor.
