The Marion Pilot Thursday May 2, 1895
REUBEN H. NOTT.
Reuben H. Nott was born in Morgan county, Ohio, Feb. 25, 1812, and died at his late residence in Marion, Iowa, April 29, 1895.
At the age of three years, on account of his father's death he went to live with his uncle Richard Cheadle, where he remained until old enough to care for himeself. He was married in Zanesville, O., to Miss Elizabeth Crossland, May 1st, 1833.
In the spring of 1852 he removed with his family to Marion, Iowa, where he has since resided.
When the excitement of the slavery question was at its height, he worked on the underground railway, and often took pride in relating his exploits, refusing large sums of money rather than reveal the hiding place of the poor refugee.
Being a pioneer settler in Marion he took great interest in any and all matters pertaining to the outgrowth of the village, town and city.
For a number of years he affiliated with the masonic order occupying the highest honors conferred on a symbolic mason.
The deceased was one of the sturdy pioneers whose word was as good as a bond--his integrity beyond question, and ever scrupulously careful not to promise beyond his ability to ful[l]fil to the exact letter. He was an interested reader of current events and always found fully posted in county, state and national affairs. A good citizen, a kind father has gone to his final home--may he rest in peace.
