Funeral Services Held Wednesday for Arthur E. McGowan
Saturday morning one of his sons found Arthur Earl McGowan dead at his home, 499 Central avenue, Marion. He had been around as usual the previous day and it was thought that he had slipped away about 11 o'clock Friday evening. His wife was visiting relatives at Tuscaloosa, Ala., at the time.
Mr. McGowan conducted a filling station just this side of the Central avenue bridge, and was by profession a rug weaver, a kindly, likeable man, well-read, and of a philosophic turn.
He was a native Iowan, born at Morley August 8, 1879, the son of William and Susie Groves McGowan, and came to Marion in 1889 from Fairview in Jones county. He was married at Marion on October 27, 1906 to Margaret Dempsey, who survives together with their five sons, Clarence, Leo, and Clement of Marion, and Donald and Ronald of Garrison. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; two brothers, Harley McGowan of Marion and William McGowan of Chicago, and four sisters, Mrs. Blanche Cherry and Mrs. Lillie Etzel, both of Chicago, and Mrs. Addie Hanson and Mrs. LaVerna Cunningham, both of Marion.
Funeral services were held in the Yocom chapel at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, in charge of the Rev. J.P. Gable, pastor of the Methodist church. The bearers were his five sons, Clarence, Leo, Clement, Donald and Ronald, and a nephew, Carl McGowan. Burial was made in Oak Shade cemetery.
