The Marion Sentinel Thursday April 29, 1915
Obituary of George W. Holmes.
George W. Holmes was born in Marion, Iowa, April 23, 1861, and died in Kankakee, Illinois, April 18, 1915. His early life was spent in Marion, removing to Cedar Rapids with his parents when about twelve years old. His common school education was finished in the schools of that city, afterwards taking a special course in Coe college. He early affiliated himself with the First Presbyterian church of Cedar Rapids. His was a quite[sic], studious nature, devoting himself to the task in hand rather than enlarging his circle of acquaintances.
The science of shorthand interested him, and, mastering it by himself by night study, he adopted it as his life work. His first position was in Burlington, Iowa, afterwards going to Chicago. He was in the employ of one firm for twenty years, and, his health failing, he went to a hospital at Kankakee, where he spent his last days.
The funeral services were conducted at Marion, Iowa, at the home of his mother and brother, on Tuesday, April 20, 1915, the Rev. C.F. Ensign, D.D., officiating.
