Mrs. H. McGowan Died Saturday
Mrs. Harley E. McGowan, 75, died Saturday March 19, at 9 a.m., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John (Edith) Byse, on Blairs Ferry road, west of Marion, where she had made her home for almost two years.
She was born Ruba Emily Gates, daughter of John C. and Mary Gates, on September 21, 1879, at Massillon. She came to Marion as a small child, attended the Marion schools and graduated from the Marion high school in 1900.
She attended Iowa State Teachers college, and later taught school in Linn county. She was married at Anamosa, April 30, 1903, to Harley E. McGowan. Mr. McGowan died May 24, 1947, at Marion.
Surviving in addition to Mrs. Byse, are four other daughters, Mrs. Andrew (Ruby) Gessner, and Mrs. Malcom (Julia) Adee of San Diego, Calif; Mrs. Leonard (Alice) Olson of Homewood, Ill.; and Ellyn McGowan, of Cedar Rapids; two sons; Thomas E., of Marion; and Glenn, of Burlington; sixteen grandchildren, and four great grandchildren; one brother, Charles F. Gates and one sister, Mrs. Edward (Crystal) Davis, both of Covina, Calif. One son, Carl, preceded her in death.
Memorial services were conducted in the Murdoch Chapel, Marion, Tuesday, at 1:30 p.m. by the Rev. J.P. Knepper. Interment was in Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion.
