Harley E. McGowan Dies at Farm Home
Harley E. McGowan, 70, died at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at his farm home on west Eighth avenue after a brief illness. Born at Marion, May 13, 1877, the son of William Penn and Susie Groves McGowan, he spent most of his life in Marion. He married Ruby E. Gates at Anamosa, April 30, 1903.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and five daughters, Carl McGowan, Thoams McGowan, Mrs. J.W. Byse, Mrs. Andrew Gessner and Mrs. M.M. Adee, all of Marion, Mrs. L.E. Olson of Chicago, Glenn McGowan of Burlington and Miss Ellyn McGowan at home; 10 grandchildren; a brother, William of Ottumwa, and four sisters, Mrs. Tom Cherry, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. C.M. Cunningham and Mrs. A.T. Hanson, Marion and Mrs. Frank Etzel, Wayne, Mich. A brother, Arthur, and a sister, Mrs. Martin Izer, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were conducted from the Yocom chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. John Watterson of Newton in charge. Pallbearers were Carl, Thomas, and Glenn McGowan, John Byse, Malcom Adee and Andrew Gessner. Burial was in Oak Shade cemetery.
