Mary Durham, 94, Civil Service Employe, Dies
Miss Mary Wolcott Durham, 94, of 1170 Tenth street, Marion, a Civil Service employe in Washington for 42 years, died Saturday at 9 p.m. in a Cedar Rapids nursing home following a brief illness.
Miss Durham was born at Marion Jan. 4, 1858, the daughter of Samuel W. and Ellen Wolcott Durham, pioneer residents of Marion. The farm on which she was born comprises the northeast section of Marion and the old Durham homestead still stands on East Seventh avenue.
A graduate of the Marion high school, Miss Durham went to Washington more than 65 years ago. She was employed in the bureau of accounting in the treasury department, retiring in 1928. Since her retirement she had resided in California and Marion.
She was a member of the Society of the Mayflower Descendants and a past regent of the Continental chapter of the D.A.R., Washington.
Surviving are a brother, Benjamin H. Durham of Pasadena; a niece and two nephews.
Services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Yocom-Murdoch chapel by the Rev. D. Loferski. Cremation cimmittal[sic] services will also be held at the chapel. The ashes will be interred in the family lot in Oak Shade cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel until 10 a.m. Tuesday.
