The Marion Register, Marion, Iowa Wednesday November 8, 1893
OBITUARY
Died, at the home of his brother, Richard Benham, in Brunan Valley, Idaho, Oct. 19, 1893, William Benham, age 77 years, six months and three days.
The deceased was the son of Jacob and Pathena Benham and was born June 16th, 1816, in Virginia. He moved with his father's family to Kentucky in his youth, where he grew to manhood and on April 7th, 1842, in the city of Covington, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Pierce. In 1852 they came to Marion, Iowa, where they continued to live till the time of their death. Eight children were born to them, six of whom are still living. The wife and mother died in 1887, since which time the deceased made his home with his son, William, till April, 1892, when at the earnest solicitation of two sisters and a brother living at Brunan Valley, Idaho, whom he had not seen for many years, he went to make them a visit where he remained until he died. He had been troubled for some time with a cancerous growth on his nose. Last April by the advice of his friends he had an operation performed with the hope that he might gain permanent relief. He grew worse however and by August he was confined to his room.
The deceased was converted a number of years ago under the preaching of Rev. N.A. McConnell and united with the Christian church at Marion where he continued a faithful and consistent christian. He was a man of few words, yet his exemplary life and christian example gained for him the respect and confidence of all who made his acquaintance. He had great respect for the opinions and rights of others and was noted for his charity and honorable dealings with his fellowmen. He thus naturally drew about him a large circle of friends wherever he went. During his short stay in Idaho with relatives, he so endeared the people to him, that all business houses were closed for the day that the citizens might attend his funeral to do honor of one whom they had learned to love. His suffering toward the last was very great and the last week he was unconscious and yet through all those months of suffering he was patient and bore it with that fortitude that characterizes one who is ready to go and is only waiting the summons of the Master. He was a kind and devoted husband and a loving father. He will be remembered by a large circle of friends and acquaintances in Marion where he had lived so long.
The funeral services were held in Brunan Valley and his body laid away in the Whitcomb cemetery to await the resurrection morn.
