Obituary of Edward Fernow
-------------------------
Edward Lysander Fernow was born near Marion, Iowa, on April 3, 1863. His entire life was spent in this vicinity. While still a youth he was left fatherless, and heavy responsibilities fell on his young shoulders. As in all other things he was true to the trust, and proved himself a loyal son and brother. Conscientious and goodness marked his whole life. He was a dependable man.
He attended the Marion High school and also Coe college. On leaving school he followed his occupation of farming. He has always been recognized as a progressive and successful farmer, aiding and promoting every movement for agricultural advancement. He was a member, and had been an officer in the Concord Agricultural club.
He united with the Presbyterian church of Marion on January 27, 1877. He was a consistent and faithful member through all the years. He served his church in all its offices. For twenty-one years he was an elder, and for the last ten years has honorable and nobly filled the position of clerk of the session.
His example was one worthy to be followed, and his influence was always good. He held many positions of trust and served his community in manifold ways. He was known as a public-spirited and useful citizen, and as such his loss will be keenly felt by the whole community.
On March 3, 1892, he was married to Miss Carrie B. Bloom, who, with their three children, Ruth, Samuel and Helen, survive him; also a niece and nephew, Dorothy and Donald Drew, who made their home with them, and a sister, Mrs. John Crew, and three brother, Fred, Carl and Wesley.
His death followed an illness of two weeks duration, and came at six o'clock in the evening of October 17, 1917. Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church of Marion, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Harry Glenn Finney. BUrial was in Oak Shade cemetery.
"Servant of God, well done!
Rest from thy loved employ;
The battle fought, the victory won,
Enter thy Master's joy!"
