Obituary of Mrs. C.H. Kurtz.
Sarah Armstrong Kurtz, second daughter of Dr. James M. and Nancy Jane Westfall Armstrong, was born in Carroll county, Ohio, August 14, 1847, and died at Marion, Iowa, March 23, 1915. She was married to C.H. Kurtz at Lisbon, Ia., December 6, 1866.
She leaves surviving her husband, her daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Snidecor of Long Beach, Cali., with her two young sons, her sisters, Mrs. Harriet M. Roberts, of Burlington, Kan.; Mrs. Anabella Shaum, of Tarkio, Kan.; her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Geneva Kurtz, of Cedar Rapids, and her three children, wife and children of her only son, Roy Kurtz, who preceded her in death, and her brother, Levi Armstrong, of Rockford, Ill.
Her father and the family came to Lisbon, Ia., in 1856. With her husband she moved to Marion in December, 1880, where they since resided.
She became a member of the M.E. church in her early life, was a charter member of the Marion chapter, O.E.S.; of chapter C.S. of P.E.O, sisters and a member of the Reading Circle and of the W.R.C.
Mrs. Kurtz loved her church and her marked talent in music was freely given as leader of the choir in her home town of Lisbon and a member for many years of the choir in Marion; as a member of the Ladies' Aid society and its president she gave unstintedly[sic] of her talents to it.
In all the organizations of which she gave in an equal degree all the effort of which she was capable.
The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Methodist church, conducted by her pastor, Rev. A.T. Bishop, assisted by Rev. S.R. Beatty, of Mt. Vernon, and Rev. J.B. Jones. Many friends were in attendance, among them being many from Lisbon, her old home, and other towns in this vicinity. From a distance were her daughter, Mrs. Snidecor, of Long Beach, Cali.; her niece, Mrs. William Littell of Tarkio, Mo., and her sister-in-law Mrs. L. Armstrong, of Rockford, Ill. Interment was in Oak Shade cemetery.
