MARION MOURNS SUDDEN DEATH OF C.H. KURTZ
---------------------------------------
PASSES PEACEFULLY AWAY TUESDAY NIGHT WHILE HE SLEPT
----------------------------------------
Prominent in Business for Half a Century and Honored Veteran of Civil War He was Loved By All

C.H. Kurtz, prominent in business circles in Marion for half a century, and the last of the original stockholders of the First National bank, honored veteran of the civil war, and a man who was loved by all for his sterling qualities, a man whose ideals were of the highest and always a gentleman, passed peacefully away while he slept Tuesday night. His heart weakened during the night and when his room was visited about 11 o'clock yesterday morning he was found dead in bed.
Tuesday evening he had been in Cedar Rapids for dinner, as was often his custom, and when he returned home he sat and chatted for some time with his daughter-in-law and granddaughter, with whom he made his home, talking about the earthquakes in California, and seemed in the best of spirits and happy. It is his custom to rise late so nothing was thought about him until about 11 o'clock when Mrs. Geneva Kurtz went to his room only to find that he had been dead for several hours.
The funeral was held from the Methodist church at 2 o'clock tomorrow (Friday) afternoon and will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Earle A. Baker. The Masonic bodies, the G.A.R. and W.R.C. will attend the services in a body and the Masons will take charge of the services at the grave. The burial will be in Oak Shade cemetery.
Mr. Kurtz was born in Pennsylvania, March 29, 1940, and came to this state when about seven years old. He settled in Lisbon, in the mercantile business for some years, after which he was appointed county recorder. He served several terms in that capacity, then was appointed cashier of the First National bank of Marion, affiliated with the Marion Savings bank. He was president of the former institution for a few years and was on the board of directors of both banks up to the time of his death. He was connected with each bank for about 35 years, and also was a member of the board of directors of the Linn County Building and Loan association.
The dead man was a Civil war veteran, having been a lieutenant in the Twenty-fourth Iowa infantry. He was a member of the Robert Mitchell post of the G.A.R. here, and recently attended the state encampment at Mason City. While there he slipped and fell while looking at a monument, and was confined to his bed for a week with the injury received; being unable to meet with the convention. His work of keeping roster for the soldier dead for use on Memorial day was a loving duty he assumed and one greatly appreciated. He was also a member of the Masonic fraternity, and belonged to other lodges.
For several years he has lived with his daughter-in-law at the present home. His wife is dead. He is survived by two brothers, Sam of Lisbon, and D.H. of Cedar Rapids, as well as one sister, Mrs. John Hahn, of Cedar Rapids. Other survivors are Mrs. Roland Niles, a granddaughter; Lieutenant Maurice Kurtz of Honolulu, a grandson; Mrs. Mercer of Keokuk, a granddaughter; Roy Colvin of Marion, a grandson; Elwyn Snikecor[sic] of Corona, Calif, a grandson, and two great grandchildren. His wife, one daughter, and a son are dead.
