Helen M. Thurston was born in Darien, Genesee Co. Ne. Y., June 11, 1832. When 14 years of age, she with her parents, moved to Kane county, Ill. She was married to Captain J.C. Austin in Dundee, Ill., July 21st, 1848, where her first three children were born, George C., who died in infancy, Frank B., now living in Cedar Rapids, and Edmund F., who died at Hale, Iowa, Sept. 15th, 1850. In 1855, she with he[r] husband and family moved to Iowa, settling in Hale township, Jones county, afterwards moving to Wyoming, Iowa, where their youngest son, George T., was born. She was converted at an early age, becoming a member of the Presbyterian church of the latter place under the pastorate of the Rev. Geo. R. Carroll. Later, moving to Anamosa, she jointed[sic] the Congregational church, of which denomination she has ever since been a faithful and consistent member. About twenty years ago she and her husband came to Marion, where she has since resided. June 9th, 1902, Mr. Austin died and after his death she made her home with her youngest son, George T. She passed away Jan. 19th, 1911, at an advanced age, mourned by a large circle of friends and neighbors.
Mrs. Austin was of a retiring, affectionate disposition. She lived a very quiet, unassuming life, enjoying the affection of her family and neighbors, all of whom were her friends. She is survived by two sons, Frank E. and George T., three grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. B.C. Warner, of Brainard, Minn. The services were held at the home, 1920 Eighth avenue, the Rev. Jay Jasper Jones officiating, assisted by the Rev. James AIken Smith.
