OBITUARY
James Dawson Coffey was born in this home July 3rd, 1909, and is the second child and son of William and Jessie Coffey. He died at 4:30 a.m., March 8th, 1915. Aged 5 years, 6 months, 5 days.
To speak our feelings properly, we would not call him James Dawson Coffey, but Jimmey, who was the bright brown eyed boy, shy to strangers to be sure, but never-the-less a lovely generous hearted little fellow.
Wherever Jimmie was known, he had a host of friends; you get his confidence and you would hear the merry prattle of his voice, and be the subject of favors from his generous soul.
I shall long remember the early visits made in the Coffey home; Jimmey was shy, I could scarcely get into conversation with him; but one day Jimmey came to me after church service was over and asked me to go to dinner with him. I gladly accepted the invitation, but said to him, "Jimmie you must ride with us, for we are your guests" he did so, and how royally he entertained us. The generous little fellow would have taken us home with him every Sabbath to dinner. I have for a long time felt sure of a welcome smile when I entered Prairie Chapel on Sunday morning if Jimmie were there; those eyes always sparkled in recognition of his friends.
He was a boy of promise, for in him were the elements that gave foundation to many paternal expectations of the future. There was a sound mind; a well developed body; a good parentage; all these gave promise of the future man as seen in the boy.
We cannot understand why it should not have been fully realized, and Jimmie spared to his parents. But He who orders all things rightly. He who makes no mistakes, has ordered otherwise.
Today we bow in submission to our Heavenly Father's will thanking Him for the few beautiful years of this precious little boy's life. "For of such is the kingdom of heaven." Jimmie is departing from his earthly home leaves his father and mother, Johnnie and Mary, and only a little way behind him Grandpa and Grandma Sanborn.
This weary little boy, who was so tired in his last days has gone up the golden stairs, and in the Good Book we read of the Good Shepherd "Who taketh the lambs in his arms, and carries them in his bossom[sic]."
Our little hero is resting now, no more to be weary and diseased.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.B. Jones at the family residence, March 9th.
