The Marion Register Friday March 17, 1905
John Coffey.
John Coffey was born in Clark county, Ohio, October 6, 1832, and departed this life March 12, 1905, at the age of 72 years, 5 months and 6 days. He was married May 4, 1854 to Cyrene Dawson, who died about four years ago. To this union were born ten children, six of whom are living, Mrs. Anna Severtson, of Manchester, Iowa; George and Jerry, who are located in Washington; William and Mary and Euphemia, who were at home at the time of the father's death. He also leaves a brother and sister in Ohio.
His boyhood and early manhood were spent on his father's farm and the log house still stands in which both his father and he were born. He finished his education in a select school in Mechanicsburg, Ohio. He taught several terms in his native place and in Illinois. In the spring of 1866 he, with his wife and four children, started in a covered wagon to this state, arriving here thirty-eight years ago the 14 of last June. He at once commenced to make a farm out of the timber land. For a time they lived in the wagon until a temporary cabin could be built. Afterwards logs were hauled to the mill and a house from the native timber was erected on the site of the present one in which he died.
His health began to fail a number of years ago and as he grew older he became more patient and more resigned. The stranger as well as the friend always found a welcome in his home. The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon and were conducted by Prof. W.W. Gist, of the State Normal, Cedar Falls, an intimate friend of the deceased and his family for the last twenty-three years. He was assisted by Rev. J.P. Van Horn, pastor of the Prairie Chapel church. Interment was at the Prairie Chapel cemetery.
