Vinton youth suffocates
VINTON -- A 14-year-old rural Vinton boy died of suffocation Tuesday night when the tractor he was driving went off the road, overturned and pinned him by the neck.
Lawrence "Scooter" Scott was found by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence "Terry" Scott around 7:30 p.m.
Authorities said young Scott was driving on Benton County road two miles south and one mile east of Urbana when the tractor hit the railing of a bridge and went down an embankment.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at Virginia Gay Hospital, Vinton.
Lawrence "Scooter" Soctt was born June 23, 1964, at Cedar Rapids. He was in the eighth grade at the Urbana Community School and was a member of Polk 101 4-H group.
Surviving besides his parents, Lawrence and Maureen Mercer Scott, are a brother, Derek, at home; his grandmothers, Mrs. Bessie Scott and Mrs. Lucille Jedlicka, both of Marion; and his great-grandmother, Belle Scott, Vinton.
Services: Friday at 10 a.m. at First Christian Church, Center Point, by the Rev. Joe Jones. Burial: Oak Shade, Marion. Visitation after 2 p.m. Thursday at Murdoch's, Center Point.
