Obituary of J.M. Guthrie
Joseph Martin Guthrie was born in Jefferson county, Pennsylvania, April 29, 1843, died at this home in Marion Wednesday morning August 30, 1911, at the age of 68 years, 4 months and 1 day. He moved with his parents to Iowa when a young boy spending most of his life in Delaware county until about five years ago when he moved to Marion.
He was married December 12, 1867, to Maria L. Drinkwine of Wisconsin, who today mourns his loss. Four children were born to this union, Hattie, who died at Hopkinton in 1900; Sadie, wife of T.M. Srack, Mrs. Alice Blanchard of Omaha; and Miss Tillie Guthrie of Marion.
Mr. Guthrie had two brothers, Harvey of Hay Springs, Nebraska; James of Grand Island and one sister, Mrs. Noney Pomeroy of Mitchell, South Dakota, all of these being with him at the time of his death. Mr. Guthrie had five grand children, among whom are Joseph and Frank Walker who live at Marion.
He was a veteran of the civil war, being a member of Co. B 4th Iowa Cavalry in '61. He was a volunteer and served until he was honorable discharged whereupon he re-enlisted and served until the close of the war.
The funeral services were held in the home of his daughter, Mrs. F.M. Srack on Sixth street.
Rev. Thompson, a life long friend of the deceased, spoke words of comfort to the family and friends. The G.A.R. of which Mr. Guthrie was a member, took charge at the grave.
