Obituary of Charles Grommon
Charles D. Grommon was born December 25, 1848, at Marion, Iowa, and died January 21, 1920, and was 71 years and 4 weeks old.
He was the eldest of a family of five, having had three brothers and one half sister, all of whom have passed beyond, he being the last to go, the father and mother having died about thirty years ago.
He was married to Sarah Hutchinson in 1870. She only lived two and one-half years and to this union was born one daughter, Mabel Sarah, now Mrs. C.B. Rogers, of Minneapolis, Minn.
He was married on November 2, 1876, to Miss Mary A. Newell, who passed away on February 13, 1913. To this union one son, Leroy Grommon, now living in Marion, was born.
Charles D. Grommon lived at Marion nearly all his lifetime, the only absence being for one or two years spent with this parents in Kansas. He followed the trade of his father, that of a brick and stone mason. He was an industrious, honest and courageous man in every way.
He was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church about 30 years ago, and was always found in his pace in the church until failing health prevented his attendance at services. He was also willing and ready to help those in trouble and need.
He tried to enlist in the Union Army during the Civil war, but being of small stature and of immature age, he was denied the privilege of serving his country in military service.
He also followed his father's precept and example in becoming a member of Osceola Lodge No. 18 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellow at an early age and has been a loyal and consistent member of that fraternity during all these years.
He was also a member of the Linn County Old Settlers' Association and took an active part in the affairs of that organization.
Upon passing, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. C.B. Rogers, of Minneapolis, Minn., and one son, Leroy Grommon, of Marion, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He passed away at the home of Leroy Canedy, a cousin, and funeral services were held Friday afternoon, January 23, 1920, at 2 p.m., in the M.E. church, and were conducted by Rev. A.H. Hanscom. Burial took place in Oak Shade cemetery, Marion.
