13 October 1932 - The Tipton Advertiser

John M. Rider, 83, registrar at the Iowa Masonic consistory No. 2, and retired manager of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. at Cedar Rapids, died early Friday morning in University hospital in Iowa City, the result of an auto accident last Monday when his car overturned near Laurens and he suffered a fractured vertebrae and paralysis in the lower part of his body. Mr. Rider was an officer in many Masonic bodies and received the thirty-third degree in 1927.

Born in Pennsylvania he came to Iowa as a boy with his parents. He later became proprietor of newspapers at Wilton and Tipton, was postmaster at Wilton,, and cashier of the Wilton Savings Bank. He moved to Cedar Rapids in 1905.

Impressive services were held Saturday in consistory temple at Cedar Rapids. The high regard in which he was held also was attested in the many floral tributes which surrounded the casket. Following scripture reading and prayer W. B. Boyd, who for more than forty years had been an intimate friend of Mr. Rider, delivered a very complimentary eulogy. Then followed the impressive ritual served by Bruce chapter Rose Croix and under escort of Apollo commandery Knight Templar the funeral cortege proceeded to Oak Hill cemetery where Masonic services were conducted.
