Leo L. Nieland, U.S. Navy (Ret), 47, of 1863 Sixth ave. and a resident of Marion for 30 years, passed away at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31 in a Cedar Rapids hospital. He was born the son of Walter W. and Margaret M. Sturtevant Nieland on Sept. 23, 1926 at Marengo. On March 21, 1946 at Marion he was married to Betty Jane Scott. Mr. Nieland served with the U.S. Navy for 22 years, serving during World War II, and during the Korean and the Viet Nam Conflicts. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 208 in Marion.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Jane Nieland of Park City, Ill.; his mother, Margaret Nieland of Marion; two daughters, Mrs. Terry (Karen) Fisher of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Bill (Shirley) Voinovich of Park City, Ill.; four grandchildren; one brother, Capt. John Nieland of Omaha, Neb.; and three sisters, Mrs. Dean (Mary) Beckley, Mrs. Waldo (Charlotte) Morris and Mrs. Lyle (Anna Marie) Carpenter, all of Marion. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter W. Nieland; a brother, Arthur; and a sister, Dorothy Kraus.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Murdoch chapel in Marion, conducted by the Rev. Peter Morgan. Interment was in Oak Shade cemetery.
