Rites Thursday for Former Resident
John C. Smith, 88, a longtime resident of Marion until moving to Temple City, Calif., in 1962 to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Donald Brooks, passed away at 5:30 p.m. April 22, in a Santa Anita nursing home. He was born the son of John and Freda Schreaber Smith on July 13, 1885 in Marion. On Jan. 9, 1910, at Manilla, he was married to Agnes LaTurno who passed away Jan. 8, 1959. Mr. Smith was an engineer for the Milwaukee Railroad for over 48 years, until retiring in 1950. He was a 50 year member and past master of the Marion Lodge No. 6, A.F. & A.M., and a member of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
Surviving are a son, John D. Smith of Cedar Rapids; two daughters Mrs. Donald (Dorothy) Brooks of Temple City, Calif., and Mrs. Freda Mary Voss of Marion; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, LeRoy S. Smith.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 26 at the Murdoch chapel in Marion, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Bender of the First Congregational church in Cedar Rapids and Marion Lodge No. 6, A.F. & A.M. Interment was in Oak Shade cemetery in Marion.
