Was An Active Worker in Marion Chapter O.E.S. For Past Twenty-five Years
The passing of Mrs. Susie Brown, a life whose usefulness and kindness has made her memory beloved by all hearts in Marion. Mrs. Brown had been in failing health since August, when she suffered a slight paralytic stroke. She died at 6:20 Christmas Eve at the home of her daughter Mrs. Edward O. Chapman, at Nevada where she went about three weeks ago. Before that time she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. John T. Christie, in Marion.
Susanna Lomas was the eldest daughter of George and Suzanna Lomas and was born in Nottingham, England, Dec. 31, 1844. IN 1846 she came with her parents to the United States in a tiny sailing vessel, and settled in Ann Arbor, Mich. where she received her education. Dec. 2, 1865 she was married to John Brown by the Rev. H.S. White in Webster, Mich. To them were born four children, Grace A. Schloeman, who died at the age of 22 years, leaving an infant son, Leo E., who was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Brown; a son William, who died in infancy, two daughters, Mrs. Mary Christine of Marion and Mrs. Florence Chapman of Nevada, who were with her when she died. Mr. Brown preceded her in death, June 19[sic], 1925.
Before coming to Marion 31 years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Brown made their home in Norway, where Mrs. Brown was matron of McCoy chapter, O.E.s. When that chapter became a member of the Grand Chapter of Iowa, Mrs. Brown was appointed to the office of Grand Ruth. She has been an active worker in the Marion chapter since coming to Marion, having served as its chaplain for nearly a quarter of a century. She would have become an honorary member of the order in another year when her 50 years of membership would have been completed. She was an active member of the Cary club for over 25 years. She was a member of the Congregational church, where she was a faithful attendant, taking an active part in all of its activities.
Mrs. Brown is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John Christie of Marion and Mrs. E.A. Chapman of Nevada; five grandchildren, Leo E. Schloeman of Chicago, Miss Grace Christie of Marion, Donald P. Christie of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Richard Crew of Perry, John E. Chapman of Nevada; one great grandchild, Virginia Mary Crew of Perry; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, Mrs. Florence Welch and Miss Georgia Welch of Ann Arbor, Mich.
Short services were held Sunday morning in Nevada. The body arrived in Marion Sunday afternoon. Funeral services were held in the Congregational church Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock. The Reverend Harold E. Carlson, pastor of the Congregational church, was in charge of the service. The impressive Eastern Star ceremony was a part of the service. Burial was in Oak Shade cemetery.
