MARION RESIDENT JOHN BROWN DIES; FOUR SCORE FIVE
John Brown, 85, died at at the family residence, 560 Fourteenth St., Friday at 12:20 p.. after a two weeks' illness. Born in West Walton, England, May 8, 1840, he came to America after his father's death at the age of fifteen, with his mother and her four children. They came directly to the home of an uncle at Ann Arbor, Mich., where the mother died sever years later.
Mr. Brown was married Dec. 2, 1866 at Ann Arbor to Susanna Lomas. Four children were born to them, a son, dying in infancy, and a daughter, Grace Schloeman at the age of 22, in 1899. She left a six months old son, Leo E., Schloeman now living in Chicago, who was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Brown.
Mrs. Brown was employed by the Michigan Central and had a run from Detroit to Chicago. In 1870 he came to Norway, Iowa and entered the lumber business and afterwards the clothing business. He retired and came to Marion in 1895. Had he lived until December 2, he and wife would have celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. John T. Christie of Marion and Mrs. Edward A. Chapman of Nevada, Iowa, five grandchildren, one great grandchild, and one sister, Mary A. Warner of Sac City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held from the Marion Congregational church at 2 p.m. today and will be conducted by Rev. W.R. Lloyd[?], assisted by Rev. George T. Hanna of Nashua, Iowa, his former pastor. Burial will be in Oak Shade cemetery.
Friends may call today at the Baxter and Fawcett chapel.
