Samuel S. Smith, Retired Methodist Pastor, Dead At 79

Funeral services will be held at the Yocom chapel at 2:30 p.m. Saturday for the Rev. Samuel S. Smith, who died Thursday in a Cedar Rapids hospital. Surviving him is an only son, De Witt H. Smith, attorney of Mairon, and four grandchildren, Geraldine, Louise, Richard and Leslie. Mrs. Smith died in 1925.
Mrs. Smith was the youngest of ten children and the last to survive. He was born at DeWitt April 8, 1857, the son of Robert Lee Smith and Mille Graham Smith, who came to Iowa from Butler county, Pennsylvania. He was educated in the public schools at DeWitt and studied law at Valparaiso, Ind, being graduated from the college of law of the University of Valparaiso. He practiced law at DeWitt following admission to the Iowa Bar in 1888. Feeling a call to the ministry as a greater field for service, he took special training and was admitted as an elder by the Upper Iowa conference of the Methodist church in 1896. He served pastorates at Monona, where he married Minnie B. Smith Dec. 2, 1896, and Mechanicsville, Nora Springs, Clarence, Wyoming and Prairie Chapel. Since retirement from the ministry he had made his home with his son, assisting him in the practice of law.
