Funeral Services For J. Cook Held Monday Afternoon
--------------------------------------------------
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Yocom chapel for Jens Cook, 63 years old, who died at 9 o'clock Saturday evening after an illness of four months following a stroke of paralysis.
Rev. Carl E. Krog, pastor of St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran church was in charge of the service, and burial was made in Oak Shade cemetery.
Mr. Cook was well known and liked in Marion, where he had lived since 1883, being employed by the Milwaukee. Scores of friends mourn the death of one who could always be counted upon for a cheerful word or a kind deed. He was born in Gudrup, Oenmark[sic], Oct. 27, 1868, and came to American when he was 19 years old. In 1891 he was married to Mrs. Martha Sheets, coming with her to Marion two years later. They had made their home here since.
He was employed for many years in the Milwaukee railroad shops, retiring when the shops at Atkins closed two years ago. Although Mr. and Mrs. Cook had no children of their own, William Sheets made his home with them from the time he was eight years old until he reached manhood and they raised him as their own. Mr. and Mrs. Sheets had been here helping to care for Mr. Cook. Mr. Cook was a devout member of the Evangelical Lutheran church here and was active in church affairs.
Surviving him are his widow, who lives in Marion; William Sheets of Nevada, Mo., and two brothers, Peter Cook and Jergen Cook who live in Denmark.
