Former Pioneer Grocer Came to Marion to Live in 1892
------------------------------
One of Marion's prominent veteran grocers, Max Voris, 73, died Tuesday at 10 p.m. at his home at 410 Eighth street, following an illness of six years duration. He had been confined to the bed for the last month.
Born April 4, 1957, at Greenwood, Ind., he lived the greater share of his life here in Iowa. He came to this state with his parents in 1864, when he was seven years old, and settled in Vinton. He attended the Vinton schools and took college work at Iowa State college at Ames. Shortly after this he was married to Frances Elizabeth Crawford of Shellsburg in November 1880. She lived until 1887. Two children, William Edward, of Shellsburg and Bess of Washington D.C. were born to them. He was married a second time to Emma Crawford of Vinton in 1890.
Mr. Voris made his home in Shellsburg until 1892 when he moved with his family to Marion and lived here the greater share of the time except for eight years when he lived in Cedar Rapids and the few winters that he spent in the south.
He was connected with the grocery business, either wholesale or retail, all the time that he lived in Marion. For a long time he worked as a commercial traveler for a grocery house and during the time made many friends.
Mr. Voris was an active church worker and took part in a number of church activities. He served as financial secretary to the Presbyterian church for a number of years.
He is survived by his widow, two children, one sister, Mrs. Susan Brewer of Vinton; a brother, D.E. Voris, of Fairhope, Ala.; and a half-brother, James Smock[sic] of Colorado Springs.
Funeral services are to be held Friday at 2 p..m. in the Yocom chapel. Burial will be in the Oak Shade cemetery.
