Earl F. Eckhart, 63, Died Thursday After An Extended Illness
The death of Earl Frank Eckhart, a citizen of Marion for more than a quarter century, occurred at his home, 1811 Third avenue, at six p.m. Thursday, Decm 19, following a long illness.
He was born Dec. 17, 1877 at Arlington, Iowa, the son of George H. and Sarah Brooks Eckhart. On January 27, 1902, he was married at Central City to Mary A. Bushnell, a Delaware county girl, and to this union came a son, Raymond, and two daughters, Mrs. Dewey Lint and Mrs. W.W. Bills, all of Marion. Surviving besides the wife and children are his stepmother, Mrs. J.F. Watson, of Independence, Mo.; a sister, Mrs. D.J. Wilson of Strawberry Point, and three brothers, Russell and Dewey Eckhart of Marion, and Willard Eckhart of Ah-Gwah-Ching, Minn.; also four grandchildren.
Mr. Eckhart, who was reared on a farm at Arlington, farmed in his earlier years, and then started railroading. He worked for a time as fireman on the Milwaukee, with a minor accident injuring his eyesight. He also worked in the Rock Island shops at Oelwein, but he came to know Marion people best while a clerk at Gordon's grocery for many years. For the past twelve years he has been gardening on some acreage near the edge of town, as health permitted. He was a faithful member of the Baptist church, and served as trustee and treasurer at various times.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. L.W. Inman, the pastor, and Rev. Frank H. Ward, of Sunshine Mission, in charge. The music was a duet by Mrs. E.A. Lagerquist and Miss Ida Patschke.
The pallbearers were L.A. Franke, E.A. Lagerquist, Wm. Alexander, Elmer Boyer, Clyo Castle and HErbert Harford. The Yocom funeral services was in charge, and burial was made in Oak Shade.
Out of town relatives attending the funeral service were Mr. and Mrs. D.J. Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Wilson, Mrs. Sherley Phelps of Strawberry Point; Mr. and Mrs. H.O. Bushnell, of Hopkinton; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Crawford, Mr. and Mrs. C. Culver and Mrs. Don Pieper of Arlington; Mr. and Mrs. Loren Bushnell, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bushnell, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Coon and daughter and Mrs. Amanda Coon of Manchester; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Burr, of Garrison; Roy Bushnell of Urbana; Mr. and Mrs. Leon Eckhart, Mr. and Mrs. T. Clark and Dorothy, Charles Bushnell, W.J. Bushnell of Cedar Rapids, and Mr. and Mrs. J. Hervey Shutts of Rock Island.
