DEATH BRINGS SURCEASE TO BEN REICHARD
-------------------------------------
Beloved Marion Man Died Monday; Funeral Wednesday
--------------------------------------
Early Monday morning death came as a friend to bring peace to the distressd body of him who was known and loved as Benjamin Reichard.
He came to Iowa with his parents at the age of six, from Franklin county, Pa., and for many years gave of his best for the upbuilding and the welfare and ideals of this community. He was educated at what was known as Western College, an early-day school located between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, and for fifteen years taught school in and near Marion, quitting this work in the mid-eighties to work for the lumber firm of George Busby & Son, and was manager of the Fairfield Lumber Co. of this city when he retired about twenty years ago.
He was married in 1871 to Maria Louise Jones, who died in 1919. To this union were born four children who survive him--George B. Reichard, of this city; Mrs. Charlotte Holloway and Mrs. I.O. Llewellen of Lincoln, Neb., and Mrs. W.S. Campbell of this city.
For a number of years Mr. Reichard has been both deef[sic] and blind; society was robbed of the service of a kindly, lovable and highly capable man. He was widely read, was a writer and speaker, a worker in church and lodge and in public welfare, serving as a member of the city council, as city clerk, as a member of the official board of the Methodist church, and for sixty years he was a member of Marion Lodge No. 6, A.F. & A.M. He was ever regareded the friend of young and old, a universally respected, esteemed and worth-while citizen.
He made his home with his son George, where his declining years were made as comfortable as possible. On April 8 he fell and fractured his hip, and since then there had been little hope of his recovery.
Yesterday, following a largely attended funeral service at the Yocom chapel, conducted by Dr. J. M. Walters, pastor of the Methodist church, the tired body was tenderly laid to rest next to the grave of his wife in Oak Shade.
