Thursday October 24, 1918 The Marion Weekly Sentinel
Eugene E. Kershner, a prominent farmer and stock-raiser of Marion township, died suddenly at an early hour, Monday morning, while seated in a chair at his home. He had been ill with influenza for about two weeks, but was apparently on the road to recovery. As both he and his son, Andrew, had been sick, and the work on the farm was getting behind, he thought he was well enough to do some of it. But he has not been in his usual robust health for several months, so this combined with his illess had overtaxed his strength and vitality more than he realized, death being due to heart failure.
Mr. Kershner has spent all of his life in Linn county, his parents being among the pioneers located at Rogers Grove. He passed his fifty-fith birthday anniversary September 19. Practically his entire life has been devoted to farming, although he spent a few years residing in the city, while his son and daughter attended high school. The family returned early last spring to their country home and he and his son formed a partnership and were rapidly establishing themselves as producers of blooded stock as well as food-stuffs on their 320 acre farm, about four miles northeast of the city.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Elizabeth, and son Andrew, both at home, and a brother residing at Denison, Iowa. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, with a brief service at the home and at the grave, conducted by the Rev. H.G. Finney of the Presbyterian church. Interment was in Oak Shade cemetery.
