Friday December 29, 1911 The Marion Register
A.W. BELL
One of Marion's best known and most highly respected citizens died at his home on south 11th street Sunday evening. He was born in Michigan, January 11th, 1841. He was a veteran Railway conductor, Mason and Soldier in the civil war. He enlisted under the first call for troops for three months in 1861, and in December of the same year enlisted again and served until December 1864, in the Army of the Potomac participating in nearly everyone of the great battles in which that army was engaged. His record shows that the number in which he bore a brave and honorable part was 19.
After the exploration of his last term of service he returned home. In the following year he married Miss Mary J. Yoxhimer. In 1867 he decided to engage in the railway train service in which he continued all his remaining years, the most of the time with the C.M. & St. Paul.
As a man he was held in the highest esteem. The railway company regarded him as one of its most faithful and efficient employes [sic]. As a Mason he was loved by the fraternity. As a soldier there was none better.
He was an esteemed member of Robert Mitchell Grand Army Post and was its delegate representative at the state encampment in Muscatine last June.
He is survived by his wife, three sons, and one daughter; Frank C., a freight conductor in the service of the Milwaukee company; Wilder C., yard clerk in Cedar Rapids; Dexter C., who works for the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Interurban company; and Edna H., who lives with her mother in Marion.
The funeral services were held in the Masonic Temple on Tuesday, Dec. 26th, at 3 p.m., and will be in charge of the Masonic Order, the G.A.R., and Rev.s S.R. Beatty and J.W. Lee assisting. The interment was in Oak Shade cemetery. The family have the sympathy of the community.
