Mrs. Mary Alice Phelps died early Monday morning at the family home, 387 Fifth avenue, following several weeks of illness. She was born Mary ALice Martin at Stoughton, Wis, September 12, 1859, was married to Ernest L. Phelps there in 1882, the family coming to Marion in 1890 To become a sterling part of this good community. Mrs. Phelps early joined the Methoidst [sic] church, was an active member of its aid society, belonged to the Cary club, but it was in her home circle and among her nearer neighbors where her genuine goodness, her universal kindness, and her generous sympathy was best appreciated.
Surviving her are two children, a daughter, Mrs. I.A. Summers of Conesville, and a son, L.M. Phelps, of Marion; also a sister, Mrs. William LaFay and a brother, Charles H. Martin, both of Stoughton, Wis.
Well-attended services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Yocom chapel, with her pastor, Rev. E.T. Gough, of the Methodist church, in charge, and burial was made in the family lot in Oak Shade cemetery.
Among the relatives and friends from out-of-town here to pay tribute to her memory were Mrs. William LaFay and Charles H. Martin of Stoughton, Wis., Mrs. I.A. Summers of Conesville, Iowa, Mrs. L.D. Thompson of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Travis and son, Eugene, Mrs. Nellie B. Bell, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Pope and Mrs. Newton Owen of Cedar Rapids.
