Death of Will Mercer.
Will Mercer, who was injured by being thrown from a horse in a running race at the Strawberry Point fair on Friday, Sept. 10, died last Sunday morning at 12:20 at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.H. Mercer, in Marion, not having regained consciousness. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the home, Rev. S.R. Beatty conducting the services. The D.R. Kinley Hook & Ladder Company, of which the deceased had long been a member, and many friends were present.
Mrs. T.M. Smith, of Sigourney, sister of the deceased, who came at the time of the accident, was also present, as were also her husband, Mrs. Mercer's father, two sisters and Mr. Mercer's brother, as follows: Jos. Dickover, of Freeport, Ill.; Mrs. B.R. Roberts and Mrs. S.O. Roberts, of Savanna, Ill., and J.H. Mercer, of Chelsea, Iowa.
William H. Mercer was the second child of Mr. and Mrs. B.H. Mercer. He was born in Belle Plaine, Iowa, Jan. 9, 1876, and died in Marion, Iowa, Sept. 19, 1909. In the year 1882 he came with his parents to Marion, and has resided in this city ever since. On Jan. 27, 1902, he was married to Miss Belle Weir, at Sigourney, Iowa, who survives him. As a member of the D.R. Kinley Hook & Ladder Company, he was the possessor of several gold medals, which he won at state firemen's tournaments in ladder climbing contests. He was also a member of the order of "Owls."
