Mrs. Martha Cottrell, Oldest Resident of City, Passed Away
----------------
Marion's oldest woman, Mrs. Martha Cottrell, died Wednesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L.D. Smith, 1335 Seventh avenue, having exceeded the allotted three score and ten by twenty-one added years.
She was born near Freeport, Ill., July 21, 1844, and was left an orphan at eight by the death of both parents. At the age of nineteen she first came to Iowa, at the time when ferry boars and stage coaches were doing a rushing business. She was married in September, 1865, to one of the returning soldier boys, Stephen Klumph. Six children were born to this union, one dying in infancy, and surviving, three daughters, Mrs. L.D. Smith and Mrs. Matt Mullin of Marion, and Mrs. Blanche Varner of El Monte, Calif., and two sons, Bert and L.A> Klumph of Marion.
Mr. Klumph died in 1883, and in 1886 she was married to John Cottrell, who died in 1911. Mrs. Cottrell has made her home with Mrs. Smith since that time, and has been a Marion resident for nearly a half century.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at the Yocom chapel. Dr. W.E. Fisher will be in charge and interment made in Oak Shade.
