John Cottrell was born in Cleveland, Ohio, July 18, 1847, and passed away peacefully in his home January 25, 1911, after an extended illness of several years, although he was confined to his bed only one week.
He was united in marriage to Mrs. Martha Klump February 6, 1886, at Clinton, Iowa. They came to Marion in 1893 and have since made thier home here. Mr. Cottrell was one of the oldest employes [sic] of the C.M. & St. P. Ry., having been for many years storekeeper, and more recently was operator of the electric turntable. Mr. Cottrell is survived by his wife, and five children, Mrs. M. Mullin, Mrs. F.O. Varner, Mrs. L.D. Smith, Bert and Louis Klump, and fourteen grandchildren, all of Marion, who were with him during his last hours. The funeral service was held at the home on Friday the 27th, in charge of Rev. S.R. Beatty.
