MARY E. FRANZ HERE MANY YEARS DIES SATURDAY
----------
PASSES AWAY AT HOME OF HER DAUGHTER, AFTER SHORT ILLNESS
-------------
Resident of City for Fifty-One Years and Beloved By All, Passes Away
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Franz, a resident of Marion for the past fifty-one years, prominent in all walks of life and particularly in the Methodist church and the Woman's Relife corps, died at 2 o'clock Saturday morning after a short illness, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Erwin, at the age of 77 years. Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, the services being in charge of Rev. Earle A. Baker. Burial was in the family lot in Oak Shade cemetery. A large concourse of neighbors and friends was present to pay a last tribute of respect to her memory.
Mary Elizabeth Yount was born in Iroquois, Ill., July 4, 1848 and in 1868 was married in Marion to John Franz, a veteran of the Civil war, and who served with distinction through that war as a member of the Eighth Iowa infantry. Mr. Franz died in 1908 and since that time Mrs. Franz had made her home with Mr. and Mrs. George Erwin.
She is survived by four children, three having died in infancy. Those surviving are Mrs. George Erwin of Marion; Mrs. Frank Snyder of Anamost [sic]; Mrs. Frank Mason of Newton and J.L. Franz of Chicago, all of whom were here for the funeral.
Mrs. Franz was ever active in those movements that were for the betterment and advancement of the community. She was a consistent and active member of the Methodist church and one of the leaders in Robert Mitchell Women's Relief corps, and she will be sadly missed in all those circles where her services and her advice were so highly prized.
