Friday, September 17, 1920 The Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette Marion News

Joel M. Courtney, one of the pioneers of the state and a resident of Linn county for seventy-nine years died at his home in Marion at 11:45 p.m. yesterday. Brights' disease and the infirmities of old age were the cause of his death. Mr. Courtney had been practically bedfast for a year and the last time he was out of the house was at the Old Settlers' picnic when he was carried to the park in Marion in a chair.
Mr. Courtney came to Linn county in 1841 and has been identified with its growth and development since that time. HE came to Iowa in the days when neighbor had to rely on neighbor and throughout his life the spirit of friendliness of willingness to help, engendered in those days was maintained.
Born June 6, 1830 on a farm in Harrison county, Kentucky, he was the oldest of seven children, all of whom are dead. When Mr. Courtney was four years old his parents moved to Montgomery county, Ind., near Crawfordsville. Three years after in 1841 the family came to Iowa and settled on a farm in this county only a few miles from what was later the farm of Mr. Courtney at Crabapple.
At that time Marion was a small village and Cedar Rapids even smaller. Mr. Courtney celebrated his eighty-fourth birthday by a public reception at his home attended by hundreds of his friends. At that time he expressed himself as being 84 years young and that was an indication of his attitude throughout his declining years.
Surviving Mr. Courtney are two sons, Wellington J. Courtney, Long Beach, Cal., Marlin W. Courtney, Marion and four daughters Emma, Retta, Alwilda and Belle, all at home at Marion.
Mr. Courtney was an active and faithful member of the Methodist church and the funeral services will be held from at the church Sunday at 3 p.m. The Rev. J.W. Lee, Cedar Rapids and the Rev. A.H. Hanscom, Marion, will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Shade cemetery.
